The Acceptance of Smart Home Technologies: A Literature Review of Benefits and Barriers Perceived by Users
Abstract
This literature review investigates factors influencing users’ acceptance of smart home technologies. Through a systematic analysis of 122 peer-reviewed articles indexed across Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, IEEE, and Scielo, the authors categorize perceived benefits into environmental, financial, psychological, and health-related domains, including energy savings, entertainment, remote health monitoring, and increased comfort. Barriers are grouped into technological (e.g., privacy concerns, interoperability), ethical/legal (e.g., data misuse, lack of regulation), and human factors (e.g., psychological resistance, knowledge gaps). The study offers strategic insight for smart home stakeholders and suggests that adoption remains challenged by complexity and user apprehension despite strong value propositions.
