Case 39-2020: A 29-Month-Old Boy with Seizure and Hypocalcemia
Abstract
A 29 month old boy presented with seizures and severe hypocalcemia, accompanied by gait abnormalities and muscle spasms. Laboratory tests revealed markedly low calcium and vitamin D levels, elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH), and radiographic evidence of rickets. The patient had a history of multiple food allergies, leading to a severely restricted diet devoid of vitamin D and calcium sources, such as milk and eggs. Despite initial stabilization with intravenous calcium, his condition highlighted the risks of nutritional deficiencies in children with food allergies. Treatment included high-dose vitamin D and calcium supplementation, resulting in gradual normalization of laboratory values and clinical improvement. This case underscores the importance of monitoring nutritional status in children with dietary restrictions and the potential consequences of misdiagnosed or unmanaged food allergies.
