Six-Year Follow-up of a Trial of Antenatal Vitamin D for Asthma Reduction
Abstract
This study evaluated the long term effects of prenatal vitamin D supplementation on asthma and recurrent wheeze in children up to 6 years of age. A randomized, double blind trial compared outcomes between mothers receiving 4400 IU/day of vitamin D₃ (intervention group) and those receiving 400 IU/day (control group). Results showed no significant difference in the incidence of asthma or recurrent wheeze between the groups by age 6, despite earlier suggestive benefits at 3 years. Secondary analyses revealed minor effects on airway resistance but no impact on spirometric measures. The study concluded that prenatal vitamin D supplementation alone does not prevent asthma or recurrent wheeze in mid-childhood, though higher maternal vitamin D levels were associated with improved lung function.
