The Future of Transplantation

Authors:
Jeffrey L. Platt, Marilia Cascalho

Abstract

This editorial explores the potential of xenotransplantation as a solution to the shortage of human organs for transplantation. It highlights a recent case where a genetically modified pig heart was transplanted into a human recipient, functioning for 7 weeks before failing. The authors discuss advances in genetic engineering, immunosuppression, and the potential for xenotransplants to serve as temporary support while autologous organs are developed. Challenges such as graft longevity, immune rejection, and the need for less toxic immunosuppression are also addressed.
