Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in New York Stat
Abstract
A multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The New York State Department of Health established active, statewide surveillance to describe hospitalized patients with MIS-C. Between March 1 and May 10, 2020, 99 children met the MIS-C case definition: 54% were male; 40% were Black and 36% Hispanic. All had fever or chills, with high frequencies of gastrointestinal symptoms (80%), rash (60%), and conjunctival injection (56%). Most had elevated inflammatory markers. Cardiac involvement was common 53% had myocarditis, 62% needed vasopressor support, and 80% were admitted to the ICU. Two patients died. The emergence of MIS-C coincided with widespread SARS-CoV-2 transmission, indicating a hyperinflammatory syndrome affecting multiple organ systems with substantial morbidity.
