Smart home technology—comparing householder expectations at the point of installation with experiences 1 year later

Authors:

Abstract

This longitudinal study of 19 UK households examined the expectations and challenges of smart home technology (SHT) from installation to one year post-use. Initial interviews captured householders’ hopes comfort, convenience, control, energy efficiency, and fears, including reliability, usability, and aesthetics. Follow-up interviews revealed most expectations were met, especially among homes with varied routines and space for zonal control. Challenges with device noise, setup complexity, and evolving usability remained. The study offers design and installation recommendations for enhancing long-term SHT adoption.
