Obesity, Immunity, and Cancer

Authors:
Jeffrey C. Rathmell, Ph.D.

Abstract

Obesity is strongly associated with increased susceptibility to various diseases, including certain cancers. This article explores the link between obesity, chronic inflammation, and immune cell changes, particularly in the tumor microenvironment. A study by Ringel et al. (2020) reveals that obesity alters cancer cell metabolism (e.g., increased lipid metabolism) and suppresses CD8+ T cell function, mediated in part by down-regulation of the PHD3 gene. These findings suggest potential therapeutic targets, such as up-regulating PHD3, to mitigate tumor growth in obese patients.
