Skeletal Fluorosis
Abstract
A 32-year-old man from an area with high fluoride levels in groundwater presented with chronic lower back pain, joint stiffness, and yellowish-brown tooth discoloration. Radiography revealed osteosclerosis and interosseous membrane calcification, with elevated bone mineral density (T-scores: +12.1 lumbar spine, +3.1 hip). Radiography revealed osteosclerosis and interosseous membrane calcification, with elevated bone mineral density (T-scores: +12.1 lumbar spine, +3.1 hip). Laboratory findings included high alkaline phosphatase (479 IU/L) and parathyroid hormone (103 pg/mL) levels, with normal calcium and vitamin D. Serum (0.05 ppm) and urinary (7.5 ppm) fluoride levels confirmed skeletal fluorosis. Treatment included defluorinated water, calcium, vitamin D, and NSAIDs, resulting in a 50% reduction in symptoms after two years.ne phosphatase (479 IU/L) and parathyroid hormone (103 pg/mL) levels, with normal calcium and vitamin D.
