Cerebral Cystic Echinococcosis

Authors:

Abstract

This Images in Clinical Medicine report documents a case of cerebral cystic echinococcosis in a 14-year-old boy from rural India. The patient presented with episodic headaches and vomiting, and was found to have papilledema on examination. MRI revealed a large multiloculated cyst in the right temporoparietal region of the brain, suggestive of hydatid disease. Craniotomy with careful saline irrigation was performed to avoid rupture during excision. Histopathology confirmed Echinococcus granulosus, identifying daughter cysts and protoscolices. No extracranial sites of infection were found. The patient was discharged with albendazole, and his symptoms resolved within two weeks.
