Seizing the Teachable Moment: Lessons from Eisenhower's Heart Attack

Authors:
Thomas H. Lee

Abstract

One reason to study history is to avoid repeating past mistakes; another is to understand what went right. The author reflects on the hospitalization of President Donald Trump for Covid-19 and recalls the events surrounding President Dwight Eisenhower's heart attack in 1955, including the crucial role played by cardiologist Paul Dudley White. Eisenhower's myocardial infarction began on Friday, September 23, 1955, while he was playing golf in Denver. Initially, he attributed his discomfort to a hamburger, and later awoke with severe chest pain, prompting his wife to call his personal physician. The news of Eisenhower's heart attack was as dramatic for Americans as the revelation that Trump had Covid-19. Dr. Leonard Scheele, the U.S. surgeon general at the time, stated that two events in his lifetime shook him severely: the president's coronary thrombosis and the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor.
