The Untold Toll — The Pandemic’s Effects on Patients without Covid-1

Authors:
Lisa Rosenbaum, M.D.

Abstract

This perspective examines the collateral impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on patients with non-Covid-related conditions. Through vivid case narratives and expert commentary, the article reveals delays in care, altered treatment protocols, suspended clinical trials, and emotional burdens placed on both patients and clinicians. Examples span cardiology, oncology, and surgery including patients with acute coronary syndromes, aggressive cancers, and advanced heart failure whose care was compromised by system constraints and infection risk. The author advocates for nuanced decision-making and empathy, urging healthcare systems to recognize that minimizing exposure risk should not overshadow timely care. The piece closes with a call to reassure the public: even during a pandemic, healthcare providers remain committed to caring for all patients.
