Bacterial Vaginosis — Time to Treat Male Partners
Abstract
This editorial explores the evolving understanding of bacterial vaginosis (BV) as a sexually transmissible condition and calls for the inclusion of male-partner treatment in BV management strategies. Citing a pivotal randomized trial, the authors highlight a significantly lower recurrence rate of BV in women when male partners received a combination of oral and topical antibiotics. Despite past skepticism due to earlier unsuccessful trials, the new findings support a paradigm shift toward acknowledging BV’s transmissibility and encouraging more comprehensive treatment approaches. The article underscores the need for patient and clinician education, as well as broader trials to assess treatment efficacy across diverse populations
