Point-of-Care Ultrasonography
Abstract
This review article discusses point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS), which refers to ultrasonographic imaging performed and interpreted by the treating clinician at the bedside. It highlights key technological advances including handheld ultrasound systems, integration of artificial intelligence, and the clinical impact of POCUS across diagnostic, procedural, and monitoring domains. The authors contrast POCUS with traditional consultative ultrasonography and examine its influence on clinical decision-making, training requirements, and cost-effectiveness. Evidence is presented for POCUS improving diagnostic accuracy in conditions like pulmonary edema, pneumonia, and thoracoabdominal trauma, and its emerging role in critical care, emergency medicine, and telemedicine
