Simple versus Radical Hysterectomy in Women with Low-Risk Cervical Cancer
Abstract
This multicenter randomized trial compared simple hysterectomy with radical hysterectomy in women with early-stage, low risk cervical cancer. Among 700 patients, the 3 year pelvic recurrence rate was 2.52% for simple hysterectomy and 2.17% for radical hysterectomy, confirming noninferiority. Simple hysterectomy was associated with significantly fewer urologic complications, including lower rates of urinary incontinence and retention. The findings suggest that simple hysterectomy may be a safe and less morbid alternative for appropriately selected patients.
