The Origins of Covid-19 — Why It Matters (and Why It Doesn’t)

Authors:
Lawrence O. Gostin, Gigi K. Gronvall

Abstract

This Perspective analyzes the contentious debate surrounding SARS-CoV-2's origins, outlining both the zoonotic spillover hypothesis linked to the Huanan Seafood Market and the laboratory incident theory involving the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The piece stresses the scientific importance of origins investigation, while critiquing how politics has obstructed transparency, access to data, and international cooperation. It traces key events from the earliest outbreak reports through recent intelligence assessments, highlighting inconclusive findings and China's obfuscation. The authors argue for a forward-looking approach to pandemic preparedness through One Health strategies, strengthened lab safety protocols, and global oversight of high-risk research like gain-of-function studies.
