Choosing the Right Path toward Polio Eradication
Abstract
This Perspective article explores the complexities and missteps in global polio eradication efforts, particularly in light of vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks. Authored by leading virologists and vaccine experts, it critiques the original goal of virus eradication and advocates instead for sustainable population immunity. The piece highlights challenges with oral polio vaccine (OPV), including silent virus circulation and immunity gaps following the transition from trivalent to bivalent OPV. It emphasizes the role of genetically stable novel OPVs and combination IPV-containing vaccines for diverse global contexts. The authors call for renewed scientific guidance, ongoing vaccine development, and clear policies that prevent premature cessation of immunization.
