Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract
This review article examines the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 1 diabetes, a population at significantly higher risk for CVD compared to the general population. The authors discuss the multifactorial pathophysiology of CVD in type 1 diabetes, including hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Key strategies for risk reduction include strict glycemic control, statin therapy for hypercholesterolemia, blood pressure management, and weight management. The article highlights the lack of randomized clinical trial data specific to type 1 diabetes, relying instead on observational studies and extrapolations from type 2 diabetes research. Current recommendations from professional societies are summarized, emphasizing individualized treatment approaches. The review also addresses emerging therapies, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors, and underscores the need for further research to optimize CVD prevention in this high risk population.
