The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health — A New National Strategy
Abstract
This perspective article discusses the 2022 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, where President Biden unveiled a comprehensive national strategy to end hunger, improve nutrition, and reduce diet-related diseases in the U.S. by 2030. The strategy builds on the legacy of the 1969 conference and addresses modern challenges such as food insecurity, chronic diseases, and health disparities. Key initiatives include expanding federal nutrition programs (e.g., SNAP, WIC), integrating "food is medicine" interventions into health care, advancing nutrition science, and promoting private-sector innovation. The plan also emphasizes cross-agency coordination, regulatory actions (e.g., sodium and sugar reduction), and physical activity promotion. While the strategy represents a significant step forward, challenges remain in implementation and addressing systemic drivers of inequity. The article calls for stakeholder engagement to ensure accountability and progress.
