Abstract

This study compared the five year outcomes of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in adolescents and adults with severe obesity. The results showed similar weight loss in both groups, with adolescents experiencing higher remission rates of type 2 diabetes (86% vs. 53%) and hypertension (68% vs. 41%). However, adolescents had higher rates of abdominal reoperations and micronutrient deficiencies, particularly low ferritin levels. Mortality rates were similar between the two cohorts. The findings suggest that gastric bypass surgery is effective for weight loss and improving obesity-related conditions in both adolescents and adults, but adolescents may experience greater health benefits despite higher risks of certain complications.
