Emphysematous Vertebral Osteomyelitis

Authors:
Xingxin Hu, M.D.

Abstract

    • This clinical case report describes a 62-year-old man presenting with back pain and lethargy who was diagnosed with emphysematous vertebral osteomyelitis and a gas-containing epidural abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Imaging revealed intramedullary gas in the L4 vertebra, extending to surrounding tissues and causing mild cauda equina compression. Despite surgery being standard, the patient was managed medically due to his condition and spinal stability. Follow-up showed successful recovery, emphasizing the importance of individualized treatment approaches in spinal infections.
