Incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease among Adults with Diabetes, 2015–2020
Abstract
This study analyzed the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among 654,459 adults with diabetes from 2015–2020 using data from the CURE-CKD registry. Key findings include:
Incidence Rates: CKD incidence declined from 81.6 to 64.0 cases per 1000 person years during the study period.
Disparities: Higher incidence rate ratios were observed among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (1.56), Black (1.41), American Indian/Alaska Native (1.33), and Hispanic/Latinx (1.25) patients compared to White patients, while Asian patients had a lower ratio (0.87).
Implications: Despite the decline, CKD incidence remains high, with underdiagnosis in early stages (<10% awareness). The study underscores the need for targeted prevention strategies, especially in high risk racial/ethnic groups.
