On the Path toward Expanding Treatment Options for Diabetes

Authors:
Sue A. Brown, M.D.

Abstract

This editorial discusses advancements in diabetes management, particularly the use of Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) systems for type 1 diabetes. It highlights the benefits of these systems, including improved glycemic outcomes and reduced hypoglycemia, while addressing challenges such as customization, access, and cost. The article also covers the emergence of open source AID solutions, referencing a clinical trial by Burnside et al. that demonstrated the efficacy of an open source system. The trial showed a significant increase in time spent within the target glucose range for users of the open source AID system compared to the control group. The editorial emphasizes the need for equitable access to these technologies to mitigate health care disparities.
