Childhood Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome — A New Challenge in the Pandemic
Abstract
This editorial highlights the emergence of a novel pediatric disorder termed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing parallels with Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome, the article reviews early surveillance data, pathophysiological hypotheses, and the spectrum of clinical presentations. It emphasizes the need for refined diagnostic criteria, long-term cardiac follow-up, and controlled trials to determine optimal treatment strategies. The condition's distinct clinical profile and genetic underpinnings suggest implications for broader understanding of viral inflammation and immune dysregulation.
