Maternal Vaccination and Risk of Hospitalization for Covid-19 among Infants
Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of maternal COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy in reducing hospitalization risk for infants under 6 months old. Using a case control design across 30 U.S. hospitals, researchers analyzed 537 infants hospitalized with COVID-19 (cases) and 512 hospitalized without COVID-19 (controls). Results showed that maternal vaccination with two mRNA doses was associated with a 52% overall reduction in infant hospitalization risk (95% CI: 33–65%), with higher effectiveness during Delta variant predominance (80%) compared to Omicron (38%). Vaccination after 20 weeks of pregnancy was more effective (69%) than earlier vaccination (38%). The study underscores the protective benefits of maternal vaccination for infants ineligible for vaccination themselves.
