Trial of Intensive Blood-Pressure Control in Older Patients with Hypertension.
Abstract
The STEP trial investigated the effects of intensive blood-pressure control (target: 110 to <130 mm Hg) versus standard treatment (target: 130 to <150 mm Hg) in older Chinese patients (60–80 years) with hypertension. The study found that intensive treatment significantly reduced the incidence of cardiovascular events (3.5% vs. 4.6%, hazard ratio 0.74) over a median follow-up of 3.34 years, with a higher incidence of hypotension but no significant differences in other safety outcomes.
