Trial of Hybrid Closed-Loop Control in Young Children with Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract
Closed loop control systems of insulin delivery may improve glycemic outcomes in young children with type 1 diabetes. This 13week, multicenter trial randomly assigned children aged 2 to <6 years with type 1 diabetes to receive treatment with a hybrid closed loop system or standard care (insulin pump or multiple daily injections plus continuous glucose monitoring). The primary outcome was the percentage of time the glucose level was within the target range (70–180 mg/dL). Results showed a significant increase in time within the target range in the closed loop group (69.3% vs. 55.9% in the standard care group), with no significant difference in hypoglycemia. The study concludes that hybrid closed loop systems improve glycemic control in young children with type 1 diabetes.
