Meconium Ileus

Authors:
Annie Le-Nguyen, M.D., and Michael-Andrew Assaad, M.D.

Abstract

    • This clinical image report describes a full-term newborn who presented with abdominal distention and failure to pass meconium. Imaging and surgical exploration revealed small-bowel obstruction caused by thick meconium, consistent with meconium ileus. Genetic testing confirmed a homozygous mutation in the CFTR gene, establishing a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. The infant underwent enterotomy and meconium evacuation, recovering well postoperatively. The case highlights the importance of early recognition and genetic evaluation in neonates with suspected intestinal obstruction.
