Guilty

Authors:
Monique A. Tello

Abstract

In this reflective perspective piece, Dr. Monique A. Tello recounts a pivotal experience as a medical intern testifying in a rape trial involving a child. Despite her commitment and careful documentation during the evaluation, the defense undermined her credibility due to her inexperience, resulting in a not guilty verdict. More than two decades later, she reflects on the enduring guilt and the systemic flaws in medical training including the hidden curriculum that discourages asking for help and reinforces toxic norms of autonomy. She advocates for continued reform in clinical education to better support both physicians and vulnerable patients.
