Placenta Increta
Abstract
This clinical image presents a case of placenta increta in a 26-year-old woman at 32 weeks’ gestation with a history of two prior cesarean deliveries. The condition, part of the placenta accreta spectrum, was identified intraoperatively during an emergent cesarean section due to preterm labor. Surgical findings revealed abnormal placental vessel invasion into the uterine wall, necessitating a cesarean hysterectomy. The patient experienced significant postpartum hemorrhage (4000 mL) requiring massive transfusion but recovered without bladder injury. Histopathology confirmed placenta increta. The case underscores the importance of early recognition of placental adherence disorders in patients with prior uterine surgery to mitigate life threatening complications like hemorrhage. The patient and infant were discharged on postpartum day 5.
