Schrödinger’s Cancer

Authors:
Mark Earnest, M.D., Ph.D.

Abstract

This personal narrative explores the psychological and existential dimensions of awaiting a critical medical diagnosis. The author recounts his experience of developing unexplained spinal pain, undergoing diagnostic imaging, and confronting the uncertainty of whether he had a survivable condition or a terminal illness. Using Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment as a metaphor, the article illustrates the tension between hope and dread when awaiting definitive medical results. The author reflects on how observation transforms possibilities into realities, drawing parallels between patient decision-making and the human tendency to delay confronting difficult truths. The ultimate diagnosis absence of cancer allowed the return to a sense of normalcy, but the experience fundamentally altered his perception of medical testing, patient care, and the psychological impact of awaiting results.
