Acute Effects of Coffee Consumption on Health among Ambulatory Adults
Abstract
This randomized crossover trial examined the acute effects of caffeinated coffee on arrhythmias, physical activity, sleep, and glucose levels in 100 healthy adults monitored using wearable sensors. Coffee consumption was not significantly associated with increased premature atrial contractions (mean 58 vs. 53/day; P=0.10), but was linked to more premature ventricular contractions (mean 154 vs. 102/day; rate ratio 1.51), greater physical activity (mean difference of 1058 steps/day), and reduced sleep (36 minutes fewer/night). No significant changes were observed in glucose levels. The study highlights both potential trade-offs and benefits of coffee consumption and suggests personalized recommendations based on genetic caffeine metabolism.
