Comparing Apples to Apples for Fibroids
Abstract
This editorial discusses the FEMME trial, which compared uterine-artery embolization (UAE) and myomectomy for treating symptomatic uterine fibroids in women seeking alternatives to hysterectomy. While myomectomy showed superior quality of life outcomes and lower symptom severity at 2 years, both procedures significantly improved symptoms. The trial highlighted key considerations: myomectomy’s higher surgical risks (e.g., bleeding, longer hospital stays) versus UAE’s fertility concerns, though pregnancy rates were similarly low in both groups. The study underscores the need for more data on uterine-sparing options, particularly for Black women, who face higher fibroid risks and disease severity.
