Guidance on Energy and Macronutrients across the Life Span
Abstract
This review article provides an overview of contemporary nutritional concepts, focusing on energy and macronutrients across the life span. It highlights the historical development of nutrition science, from ancient Greek philosophers to modern dietary guidelines, emphasizing the role of macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates) in health and disease. The article discusses the evolution of dietary recommendations, including the transition from Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) to Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), and the importance of nutrient dense foods in preventing chronic diseases. Key topics include the metabolic roles of macronutrients, their dietary sources, and guidelines for healthy eating patterns. The review also addresses the impact of suboptimal diets on global health and the potential of "food is medicine" interventions.
