Tamara S. Hannon, Silva A. Arslanian

Abstract

This article addresses the clinical problem of obesity in adolescents, highlighting its association with serious health consequences such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, dyslipidemia, and mental health disorders. The authors present evidence based strategies for assessment and management, including intensive lifestyle interventions, antiobesity medications, and bariatric surgery. The article emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary, long term care model and discusses the societal stigma and structural factors contributing to obesity. Key recommendations include eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages, promoting physical activity, and considering pharmacologic or surgical options for severe cases.
