The Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
Abstract
his case report describes a 75 year old man presenting with a 6-month history of epigastric pain, watery diarrhea, and weight loss. Diagnostic evaluation revealed severe esophagitis, duodenal ulcers, and a fasting serum gastrin level >1000 pg/mL, confirming Zollinger Ellison syndrome (ZES). Imaging identified a gastrinoma in the duodenum, which was surgically resected. Histopathology confirmed a well differentiated neuroendocrine tumor positive for gastrin. Postoperatively, the patient's gastrin levels normalized, and symptoms resolved with proton pump inhibitor therapy. The report highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to ZES, emphasizing the role of serum gastrin testing, imaging, and surgical intervention in managing this rare condition.
