Authors:
Marisha Burden, M.D., M.B.A., and Liselotte Dyrbye, M.D., M.H.P.E.

Abstract

This perspective article addresses the negative effects of financially driven decision-making in healthcare organizations, including clinician burnout, moral injury, and declining patient care. The authors introduce the concept of "administrative harm" and advocate for an evidence-based approach to work design that parallels clinical best practices. They propose integrating data-driven strategies, interdisciplinary research, and emerging technologies such as predictive analytics and AI to align job demands with resources and improve outcomes for both healthcare workers and patients. The article emphasizes the need for structural reform, investment in research, and thoughtful implementation of innovations to achieve sustainable, high-quality healthcare delivery.
