Defining the Neurologic Consequences of Preterm Birth"

Authors:
Terrie E. Inder, Joseph J. Volpe, Peter J. Anderson

Abstract

This review examines the neurologic outcomes of preterm birth, focusing on three major brain injuries white matter injury, germinal matrix intraventricular hemorrhage, and cerebellar hemorrhage and their long term developmental consequences. It highlights the role of dysmaturation (disrupted brain development) due to injury or adverse neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) environments, supported by advanced neuroimaging findings. The article also discusses interventions to mitigate impairments, including nutritional support, stress reduction, and family centered care.
