Abstract

This poignant perspective piece recounts the author’s encounter with "Ms. Omega One," an unidentified young Black woman who died from a gunshot wound shortly after giving birth. The narrative exposes systemic inequities in trauma care and media representation, noting how Black victims of gun violence in marginalized communities are often overlooked. The author reflects on the societal devaluation of Black lives, emphasizing the ripple effects of such losses particularly on the victim’s orphaned newborn. The article critiques the lack of news coverage for such tragedies, contrasting it with the attention given to White victims, and calls for broader recognition of the humanity and societal cost of these preventable deaths.
