Cerebral Alveolar Echinococcosis

Authors:
Hu Ju, Chuanchuan Liu

Abstract

This Images in Clinical Medicine report describes a rare case of primary cerebral alveolar echinococcosis in a 17-year-old boy from China. The patient presented with neurological symptoms including dizziness, headache, and right leg weakness. Imaging revealed ring-enhancing lesions with surrounding edema and midline shift. Despite negative serological tests, surgical resection and histopathology confirmed Echinococcus multilocularis infection via PCR assay. Postoperative treatment included long-term albendazole. Follow-up showed symptom resolution, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and severity of this parasitic disease.
